Ever wonder where your old couch or broken appliances end up? We break down our eco-friendly disposal process and how we keep 85% of items out of landfills.
One of the most common questions we get from customers is: 'Where does my stuff actually go?' It's a great question — and one we're proud to answer. At Fly By Junk Haulers, we're committed to keeping as much as possible out of Northeast Ohio's landfills. Here's exactly what happens after we load up the truck.
Step 1: Sorting at the Facility
After every pickup, our team sorts through all collected items at our facility. We categorize everything into four streams: donation-ready, recyclable materials, specialty disposal items, and true landfill waste. This sorting process is what allows us to divert 85% of collected items from landfills.
Step 2: Donation Partners
Items in good condition — furniture, clothing, household goods, working electronics — are donated to our network of Northeast Ohio partners. These include Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations in Cuyahoga and Summit County, local Goodwill centers, and community organizations serving families in need throughout the region.
Step 3: Recycling Streams
- Metals (steel, aluminum, copper) — sent to scrap metal recyclers
- Electronics — processed through certified e-waste recyclers
- Cardboard and paper — sent to paper recycling facilities
- Appliances — refrigerants safely removed before metal recycling
- Mattresses — foam, fabric, and springs separated and recycled
- Concrete and masonry — crushed and repurposed as fill material
Step 4: Specialty Disposal
Some items require special handling — fluorescent bulbs, certain electronics, and items containing regulated materials. We work with licensed specialty disposal facilities in Northeast Ohio to ensure these items are handled in compliance with Ohio EPA regulations.
Step 5: What Goes to the Landfill
Only about 15% of what we collect ends up at the landfill — items that are too damaged to donate, too contaminated to recycle, and don't qualify for specialty disposal. We use Cuyahoga County's Cuyahoga Landfill and other certified facilities for this final stream.
Did You Know? By choosing a professional junk removal service over curbside bulk pickup, you're significantly increasing the chance that your items get donated or recycled rather than landfilled.
