Old TVs, computers, phones, and other electronics are better recycled than thrown away. Here’s what Northeast Ohio residents need to know about responsible electronics recycling.
What Ohio Says About Electronics
In its guidance on disposing of computers and other electronic equipment from your home, Ohio EPA says “disposing of them in a landfill is not the best way to manage them” and points residents to recycling instead. We could not find an official Ohio statement that bans household electronics from the trash. Cities, trash haulers and businesses can have their own rules, so check with yours before a TV goes to the curb. This is general information, not legal advice. The good news: there are plenty of free and low-cost recycling options available.
What Counts as E-Waste
TVs (especially CRT and flat-screen), desktop computers, laptops, monitors, printers, fax machines, cell phones, tablets, and most other consumer electronics. When in doubt, assume it’s e-waste and handle it accordingly.
Free Drop-Off Options in Northeast Ohio
Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District offers free e-waste drop-off events throughout the year. Best Buy accepts most electronics for recycling at no charge. Staples accepts computers, monitors, and small electronics.
How Fly By Junk Haulers Handles Electronics
When we pick up electronics as part of a larger junk removal job, we take them to e-waste recycling facilities. We aim to keep electronics out of landfills, but we can’t promise that every item gets recycled. If you have a large quantity of electronics to dispose of, call us for a custom quote.
Data Security
Before recycling computers, phones, or tablets, make sure to wipe your personal data. Factory reset your devices and, for computers, consider using a data destruction tool before disposal.
